FROM THE SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES
Social Security Administration
Baltimore MD 21235
December 15, 1993

TO:   All SSA Employees
SUBJECT:  Equal Employment Opportunity Policy--INFORMATION

Last week Secretary Shalala issued a special message to all Department Of Health and Human Services' employees enunciating the Department's Policy with respect to cultural diversity and equality of opportunity in employment. A copy of her message is attached. Essentially, it reaffirms what has been a policy of long-standing at SSA, that we must continue to strive for and, indeed, "strengthen our commitment to a workplace that is free of discrimination or harassment of any kind . . . . "

We heartily endorse the Secretary's message. SSA has always been in the forefront of employers seeking to provide a discrimination-free work environment. We are counting on your continuing understanding and cooperation to maintain that position for, as the Secretary so correctly points out, we must understand and respect each other, if we are to understand and properly minister to the needs of the culturally diverse population we serve.

Sincerely,

  /s/
