| SUBJECT: | Gay and Lesbian Pride Month Observance Program - June 26, 2002 |
|
As part of the Department of the Interior's Special Emphasis Observance Program, the Department will join the nation in observing June 2002 as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. During this month, we will celebrate the many achievements and contributions made by gay and lesbian Americans. Gay and Lesbian Pride Month is part of the schedule of educational programs we annually provide for our employees, focused on special emphasis and diversity. These activities are authorized by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Secretary Norton's August 24, 2001, policy statement on equal opportunity and zero tolerance of discrimination. The national theme for this year's observance is "Unity in Pride." As Secretary Norton stated in the policy statement on Equal Opportunity and Zero Tolerance of Discrimination, "America is a stronger nation because of the diversity of its people. It is the many different views and perspectives held by these diverse groups that bring creativity and innovation to our nation and our Department." The DOI observance for Gay and Lesbian Pride Month will be held on June 26, 2002, at 10:00 a.m., in the South Interior Auditorium. The program speakers will be the Honorable Charles A. Ramsey, Chief, Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Department, and Ms. Barbara Warner, President, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. DOI managers and supervisors are encouraged to allow all employees to participate in ceremonies and activities in observance of Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. |
