The Peace Corps' strength arises out of its diversity. For this reason, Peace Corps has a long and honorable history of recognizing and celebrating diversity. One of the many types of diversity we value and protect from discrimination is that of sexual orientation. As you know, the Peace Corps has long recognized sexual orientation in its Equal Opportunity Statement, listing June as Gay & Lesbian Pride Month. Each year June is celebrated as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month, marking the historic Stonewall Rebellion as a major turning point in civil rights for gay and lesbian Americans. This celebration recognizes the important contributions lesbian and gay Americans have made to the Peace Corps, our nation and the world. As the Peace Corps continues its efforts to attract and maintain a diverse workforce that reflects the face of America, I ask that we take this opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made together in creating a workforce more inclusive, accepting, appreciative and aware. The Peace Corps is committed to fostering an environment of understanding and fair treatment by including issues of sexual orientation in non-discrimination policies and diversity management programs. Under the Director's office, the Peace Corps American Diversity program is committed to upholding the principles of equal opportunity and non-discrimination. We will continue to ensure that all employees and Volunteers are treated with the utmost respect and understanding as we work to achieve the three goals of the Peace Corps. During this month let us rededicate ourselves to doing more to end hatred, violence and discrimination against anyone based on sexual orientation or perceived differences. # # |
